This animation shows the "Smart Predator" B. bacteriovorus, invading a pseudomonas bacterial cell and turning it into an incubator for the daughter cells to develop and finally emerge, destroying the host cell in a dramatic burst!
B. bacteriovorus teaches us that sometimes, the self-serving acts of survival can have ramifications that affect millions in a positive way. Another lesson from B. bacteriovorus is exploiting the hidden areas of an environment, finding spaces no one else thought were habitable.

Scientific Description
This is a comma- or vibrio-shaped bacterium, whose name in Latin means “Devours bacteria.” As predator and a parasite, this microbe in action is fascinating to watch: It slams into its prey, and bores into it, and lurks within the bacterial host’s periplasmic space, multiplying daughter cells until it’s ready to “birth” its progeny. When this “birth” happens, the host cell is destroyed in a dramatic and devastating event, but the new Bdellovibrio daughter cells that emerge are lively with the energy taken from the host cell, due to the hydrolytic enzymes of its “parents” that broke down the host cell molecules to feed them.
B. bacteriovorus is a promising live, biocontrol agent, because its target host is Gram negative bacteria.
Gram negative bacteria, such as E. coli, are typically pathogenic, and enter water sources via mammalian fecal matter. The specialized mechanisms of bacterial predators, such as those of B. bacteriovorus, can contribute to cleaning up pollutants in the water environment as well as removing Gram-negative microbes that are pathogens.
