Gravitating Towards The Light – Lessons from a Phototactic Microbe

Image

I have always been enthralled by the wondrous behavior of light: how it becomes a rainbow when shone through a prism, how its reflection creates new points of view, and how it creates magical ambience for mystical rituals.

This year, my mother died. Her light ebbed away from her body, taking with it a unique brightness, that is irreplaceable. I also lost all connections to my family of origin, when she passed over.

I carry a beam of her within me and most of all, a strong lesson of how important the light of love is within my heart.

The Microbe Animal Guide that has revealed itself to me, for this journey, is Rhodocista centenaria. This bacterium sprouts motorized tendrils called "flagella" to give it the ability to swim towards light.

When conditions get anaerobic (no oxygen), R. centenaria can whisk out feelers to track the light, the light that is the source of her food.

Being able to know what she needs, when conditions change, is one of her teachings. But on top of that, rather than bemoan the loss of the things that she needs, when a situation changes for the worse, she does not despair or ask for handouts.

Instead, she finds it in herself to create the tools to make her own bridges to walk on, or builds a boat, car or train even, if she has to, in order to reach the conditions that are right for her needs. And she is not afraid of how her outward appearance must be altered, if necessary, or any transformation she must undergo, to reach these goals.

Fearless about transformation, resourceful when life changes, and willing to get on the next ship to a better life.

During these Wintertime holidays, no matter what practice you follow, remember to gravitate towards the light, and to share your own beams of heart light to all beings that join you in your journey.

Thank you R. centenaria, for your lessons this season.

Joyful Blessings, JeM and Jasper
